Dhaka Phone executives charged in connection with illegal VoIP business

Local internet service providers will be awarded IP telephony licences (VOIP)

As many as 32 local internet service providers will be awarded IP telephony licences, opening up voice calls through internet protocol (VoIP), usage of which prohibited in Bangladesh just a few days back.

Bangladesh parliament recomemded Govt. to open VoIP

[the dailystar reports] A parliamentary body yesterday made some recommendations including opening up of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) for increasing government’s revenue earnings from the telecom sector.

The parliamentary standing committee on post and telecommunications ministry proposed withdrawal of Tk 800 tax on SIM card, reducing international call routing charge from 4 cents to 3 cents, zero duty on import of mobile sets valued up to TK 3,000 each and fixing monthly internet charge at Tk 300 for home users. Development of the ICT sector in Bangladesh and Vision 2021 Digital Bangladesh

Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Brig Gen (retd) Zia Ahmed on Wednesday said the government is determined to reach the ICT facilities to the doorsteps of the people to build a ‘Digital Bangladesh’.

“To achieve the goal, optimum use of information and communication technology(ICT) facilities such as internet connectivity, fibre optics, WiMax and 3G will have to be ensured for the people,” he told a press conference here.

BTRC will issue VOIP License for Business in Bangladesh

[Md Hasan, Daily Star] The telecom watchdog has decided to issue licences for IP telephony in a move to open up voice calls through the internet protocol, the use of which has so far been prohibited in Bangladesh.

IP-telephony licensing will be exclusive to local internet service providers (ISPs). Licence holders will provide international and domestic voice calls over managed IP-based networks, according to the IP telephony licence guideline designed by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).
